Baseball Drops a Pair at CCC Rival Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team earned its second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader sweep in as many days with 9-3 win and a 10-6 win over Curry College Sunday afternoon.

In the first game of the set, Curry’s Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) pushed the Colonels to a quick 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single to score Matt Moore (Clearwater, Kan.). Later in the frame, Matt O’Neill (Milton, Mass.) would come in on a sac fly by Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) to put Curry on top 2-0.

The Hawks grabbed both runs back in the bottom of the second, beginning with a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.). Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) would follow with an RBI single to tie the game at two. RWU would take the lead in the following inning on a sac fly by Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) to bring in Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.).

Leading 3-2, the Hawks put four runs across in the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Nelson. The Colonels added one more run in the sixth on Matt Warren’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) RBI single, but the Hawks scored two more in the bottom of the inning, taking a six-run lead en route to the win.

Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing three runs in six innings. Swensen went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Thomas was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) allowed seven runs in five innings in the loss. Givens was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base for Curry, while Moore was 1-for-3 with a run.

In the second game, Curry took advantage of a pair of outfield errors in the top of the first to score four runs in the inning. The Colonels added another run in the third on a home run to right by Sam Barron (Hadley, Mass.).

Trailing 0-5, the Hawks pulled within one in the bottom of the third. Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) and Nelson came through with RBI singles as part of a four-run inning for RWU. Thomas would come through with the big blow in the following inning, hitting a two-run homer to right to put the Hawks on top 6-5. Pascarella added one more in the inning, stealing second and third before coming in on a throwing error.

Rodriguez brought in Givens with a sac fly in the fifth to pull Curry back within one, but the Hawks plated three more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win.

Keith Chamberlain (Columbia, Conn.) picked up the win in relief of Eric Diffily (North Reading, Mass.), who went 3.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned). Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save of the year. Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Thomas went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Travis Levesque (Middleboro, Mass.) gave up seven runs in three innings in the loss. Givens and Barron each finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, with Barron also adding two RBI.

Roger Williams (14-11, 6-2 CCC) travels to Salem State on Tuesday, while Curry (4-9-2, 2-3 CCC) visits Gordon on Monday.
