Baseball Absorbs 12-10 Loss to Salve Regina in TCCC Tournament Action
MILTON, Mass. – Top-seeded Curry College fell 12-10 to #5 seed Salve Regina in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Baseball Tournament action Wednesday afternoon in Milton. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-0 in tournament action and advance to the winners bracket, where they will resume play on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Colonels, now 1-1 in tourney play, will host the winner of Thursday’s Wentworth-Gordon match-up on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

Curry (26-12) shot out to a 3-0 first-inning lead thanks in large part to a two-run home run by junior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, Calif.). But Salve Regina (23-16) used a pair of huge innings to build an insurmountable lead. A seven-run second inning was sparked by a two-run double off the bat of junior Brendan Tapley (Warwick, R.I.). That was followed by run-scoring doubles by senior Dave Miller (Shelton, Conn.) and junior Matt Capone (Barrington, R.I.) off Colonels’ starter Miles Galvin (Deerfield Beach, Fla.).

The visitors extended their advantage to 12-4 with a five-run fifth inning. The big blow, and ultimately the winning margin, was provided by junior Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.), who hit a grand slam off junior reliever Chris Costa (Lynnfield, Mass.).

Curry chipped away with three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. The fifth inning featured RBI singles from senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Brian Morante (Westwood, Mass.), and a steal of home by senior Rick Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.). The seventh inning included a solo home run by Vail, followed by a pair of bases loaded walks.

Matarazzo, the Seahawks’ third pitcher of the day, shut down the Colonels over the final 2 1/3 innings to notch his first save. Sophomore Nicholas Politelli (Warwick, R.I.) picked up the win in relief of freshman starter Nick Dettorre (Wakefield, Mass.). Politelli improved to 4-2 on the season. Galvin fell to 3-4 after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs over four innings.
