10-3 Victory Gives Baseball Third Win in Three Tries This Season vs. Regionally-Ranked Wheaton
BROCKTON, Mass. – Senior pitcher Cory Collins (Whitman, MA) led Curry College to a 10-3 victory over #2 regionally-ranked Wheaton College in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. The Colonels made it three wins in three tries over the Lyons this season.  Curry had previously beaten Wheaton 7-6 last month in Florida, and 6-4 yesterday in Norton. The Colonels improved to 18-10, while the Lyons dropped to 17-7.

Collins (3-1) surrendered just five hits over eight innings and only allowed one earned run while striking out five. Junior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) and senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, MA) knocked in half of the Colonels’ runs, with Hawn going 2-for-4 with three RBI and Sweeney going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Tony Luciani (Weymouth, MA) and sophomore David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL) each went 3-for-5.

Lyons’ freshmen Eric Jensen (Gorham, NH) and Sean Ryan (Norton, MA), along with junior Rob Jenkins (Rochester, NH), each collected an RBI. Junior Kevin Calabro (Andover, MA) gave up nine hits and three earned runs in six innings to see his record fall to 2-3.

The Colonels scored their first run in the first inning after Sweeney doubled to right, bringing home senior Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, MA).

Curry held Wheaton scoreless until the third inning when Jensen hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home junior Tad Skelly (Wolfeboro, NH).

The Colonels had a productive fourth inning as they recorded four hits and three runs. Junior Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA) started the inning with a single to centerfield. After a sacrifice bunt by junior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, CA), Bruinsma singled to centerfield to bring home Jackman. Hawn then stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field, bringing Bruinsma home. Luciani then singled to centerfield, scoring Hawn.

The Lyons tried to get something going in the top of the sixth, but plated just one run on Ryan’s RBI single to left.

The Colonels put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning that was highlighted by a Hawn single to left field that brought home two. Wheaton scored once more in the eighth inning, but could get no closer.
