Curry Athletics Announces End of Year Awards

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College announced the recipients of its major awards on Saturday, including six awards from its Department of Athletics.

The recipients for Male and Female Athlete of the Year were men's ice hockey's Kalle Sundell (Helsinki, Finland) and women's volleyball's Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.).

Sundell anchored a veteran defense corps for Curry in his final season, compiling five goals and 14 assists for 19 points in 26 games in his senior campaign. His 19 points ranked second in the Commonwealth Coast Conference among defensemen. At season's end, he was named to the league's Second Team All-Conference. 

Sundell finishes his career with 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points in 77 career games. He graduated from Curry on Sunday with a degree in communication.

Pereira closed out her career by cementing her name in the Curry women's volleyball record books. In her senior season, Pereira broke her own program record with 271 kills, while also recording 249 digs. Her 3.47 kills per set and 3.19 digs per set each ranked in the top 10 of the CCC.

Pereira graduates from Curry as the program's all-time leader in kills with 793. She received her degree in accounting on Sunday.

Receiving the Male and Female Scholar Athlete Awards were men's ice hockey's Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ontario) and women's lacrosse's Sabrina Santaniello (Marshfield, Mass.).

Pellegrini, an alternate captain on the men's ice hockey team for the last two seasons, graduated on Sunday with a degree in accounting, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.95. His off-ice contributions in his career include organizing the men's ice hockey program's annual Teddy Bear Toss, as well as organizing Hockey Fights Cancer games for both the men's and women's ice hockey programs this season.

On the ice, Pellegrini completed his career with five goals and 14 assists for 19 points and a +24 rating in 65 career games on the Colonel blueline. 

Santaniello, an integral component of Curry's women's lacrosse team, graduated on Sunday with a degree in special education, and with a cumulative grade point average of 3.97. Santaniello's leadership, pride, and dedication to the Curry College lacrosse program leaves a legacy for her current teammates and student-athletes in the future. 

On the field, Santaniello completed her career with 26 goals and 14 assists for 40 points along with 36 ground balls and 74 draw controls in 27 games for the Colonels. 

Rounding out the honorees were the two recipients of the Colonel Pride Award, men's soccer defender Nick Corso (Exeter, R.I.) and athletic department administrative assistant Teresa Robinson.

The Colonel Pride Award recognizes a senior athlete who displays good sportsmanship, coachability, an excellent work ethic all while embodying Colonel pride.​​ A member of the Curry College community is also recognized for their support and dedication to the Curry student-athletes.

Corso, a captain on the men's soccer team for the past two seasons, graduated on Sunday with a degree in Criminal Justice. As the President of SAAC, former Class President in SGA, and member of the Curry College Student-Athlete Leadership Program, Corso embodied Colonel Pride each day through his academic and athletic career at Curry College.

The two-year captain saw action in 39 games for the Colonels while being recognized on the Academic All-Conference Team for three consecutive years and being named a member of the Curry College Alexander Graham Bell Honor Society. 

Robinson recently announced her retirement from Curry after 28 years of service to the College. She was a staple at the ticket booth of all home football games and worked tirelessly overseeing the department budget, work-study students, and much more. She was a strong supporter of all Curry Athletics teams and was widely loved by coaches and student-athletes alike. 

Robinson receives the Colonel Pride Award for the second time, after winning it previously in 1999.
