Women's Volleyball Splits At NEC Tri-Match

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Curry College women's volleyball team split its two matches in a tri-match at New England College. The Colonels fell to Framingham State in four sets while Curry edged the Pilgrims in five sets.

Framingham State 3, Curry 1

The Rams came out strong early and captured the first two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-22, respectively. However, the Colonels rallied back to win the third sets by a final of 25-23. Framingham State closed out the match with a 25-10 fourth set victory.

Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) posted a team-high 13 kills to lead the Rams and also added eight digs. Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) handed out 38 assists to lead the FSU offense and added a match-high 26 digs.

Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) and Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) led the Colonels with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) added 37 assists and 23 digs.

Curry 3, NEC 2

The Pilgrims struggled against the Colonels, despite taking an early lead in set one. NEC would give away the first game in extra points, 26-24, before winning set two handily, 25-18. Curry again legged out an extra-points win in set three with a 28-26 score, and NEC took set four 25-18 to force a decisive fifth set.

NEC came within one point at 12-11 following an exciting rally, but Curry won the race to the finish line with a 15-12 score on the strength of nine fifth-set kills.

 Tihani Ehia (Kaneohe, Hawaii) tallied career-highs in kills (19) and digs (26) over the five-set contest to lead the Pilgrims. Dreka Griffin (Calera, Ala.) added 12 kills.

Defensively, Meaghan Six (Manchester, N.H.) and Kowalka added 20 and 18 digs, respectively. Griffin added six blocks.

Curry was led by Pereira with 22 kills and 11 digs. Wood added 10 kills.

Five different players recorded double-digit digs for Curry, led by Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) with 20.

Curry (4-10) returns to conference play on Wednesday, October 3 with a home contest against Wentworth at 6:00 p.m.
