Women's Soccer Shuts Out Fitchburg State, 2-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team knocked off Fitchburg State University by a 2-0 final on Thursday night in non-conference action.

The Colonels netted a goal in each half to seize control. Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) registered the first goal in the 32nd minute and Maddie Wilson (Millbury, Mass.) added an insurance marker in the 55th. Goalkeeper Katelyn DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) finished with five saves to complete the clean sheet.

Fitchburg State nearly took the lead at the 10:33 mark as midfielder Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) took a shot on frame that went off the far post. After a scoreless first 30 minutes of play, Borges made her way down the right side of the field on a breakaway. She gathered the ball and put it past Fitchburg keeper Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass.) to make it 1-0 in the 33rd minute.

The Colonels wasted little time testing Hemmings in the second half, as Curry rattled off 14 shots. The stanza was highlighted by a goal from Wilson, who collected the ball off a save from Hemmings and deposited it in the back of the net to push the score to 2-0 at the 55:39 mark.

Hemmings finished with nine saves in the loss.

The Colonels concluded the contest with a 21-13 advantage in shots while the squads finished even in corners with six apiece.

Curry (6-3-0 overall) will next host Wentworth on Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. Fitchburg State (2-3-1 overall) will travel to Worcester State on Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m.
