Women's Soccer Edged By Southern Maine, 3-2

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team lost to the University of Southern Maine, 3-2, on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win, the Huskies improve to 3-0 overall. The Colonels fall to 1-1 on the season.

The teams battled each other to an even first half, scoring one goal apiece.  Southern Maine had the advantage in shots at 11-6 in the first half but it would be Curry to strike first. In the 15th minute, Maddie Wilson (Millbury, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season to put the Colonels up 1-0. Nearly six minutes later, Lauren Pelletier (Woolrich, Maine) tallied the equalizer after she put a shot past Colonels keeper Katelyn DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.).  

The second half saw the Colonels with a slight advantage in shots at 8-7.  It was the University of Southern Maine who scored the eventual game-winner at the 86:52 minute mark. The scoring in the second stanza started with a strike from Sarah Stearns (Middleboro, Mass.) in the 70th minute. The Huskies were able to knot the game in the final 20 minutes with a tally from Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) and then the game-winner from Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) in the 86th minute.  

The Colonels finished with 14 shots and three corner kicks. The Huskies finished with 18 shots and six corner kicks.

DeMaio made eight saves in net. Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made seven stops in goal for the win.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, September 8 when they travel to Northern Vermont-Johnson for a 1:00 p.m. start. Southern Maine returns to action when they host Becker on Saturday, September 8 in a 2:00 p.m. start.
