Curry College Softball - Fall 2018 Summary

Curry College Softball - Fall 2018 Summary

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Softball program held its 20th alumni game on Sunday, September 30.  There were 15 softball alumni who returned to the diamond ready for action.  Two game balls were thrown out to start the game by Julianna Giroux (daughter of Jen Scappini Giroux '08) and Audrey Talbot (daughter of Amy Surran Talbot '01).

The alumni squad could only muster four hits throughout the game and were held scoreless. Here are the players who had the hits for the alumni team, Margeaux Montuori '00, Marissa Bruno '17, Mikayla Lambert '18, and Jessica Saluti '18. The pitching duties for the current team were nicely handled by Alli May '21 Cara Costello '21 and Taylor Newcomb '21.  The solid pitching efforts of Mikayla Lambert '18 and Becca Black '18 kept the alumni team in the game until the bottom of the third inning. With one out, the current team put together an inning that featured two hits and were aided by three defensive errors, as they sent seven batters to the plate, yielding three runs breaking open a 3-0 game. The next inning saw the current team send nine batters to the plate as they banged out five more hits, producing five more runs. The final score ended up 15-0 in favor of the current team which had 16 hits on the day.  Leading the way for the Colonels with three hits was Kiana Lloyd '21, while Caroline Johnson '20, Liana Duarte '22, and Julia Price '22 each had two hits.

It was a reunion of former Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Star players and members of the Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame.  Michelle Maiocca Belmonte '98 and Leanne Tarkanian '00 handled the right field duties with a smile. Coach Weckworth was also glad to have Paige Smigiel Mascioli '14, Maria Sancinito '06, and Ariel LaRosa '15 back on the field. It certainly was an exciting game with plenty of laughs as well. A post-game pizza picnic for about 110 people was held at the field to wrap up the day.

The Curry College Softball Program would like to thank all the players who made it back for this great day of softball and would like to invite you to attend some of our games in the spring.  Perhaps one more Spring Break Trip to Ft. Myers, Florida would do the trick.  If you were unable to make it to the Alumni Game this year, plan on joining us next year.  It's a really good time!

 Fall Playdate – Saturday, October 6, 2018

The Curry College Softball program participated in the Albertus Magnus College fall playdate on Saturday, October 6 in New Haven, Conn.  The Colonels played their three fall games as allowed by the NCAA for their non-traditional season. This overnight trip was an excellent team bonding experience.

They matched up well against the host Albertus Magnus earning a come from behind 4-4 tie. Game two saw the Colonels jump out to a 3-0 lead against the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) but a four-run fourth inning left us on the short end of that score. In the third game, the Colonels jumped out to a 3-0 lead and went on to beat the College of New Rochelle (NY), 3-2. Families were the MVP's of the day as they brought some amazing food to feed the team at the conclusion of the final game.

The coaching staff is excited about the effort and the results from the day. They want to see this level of play continued into the spring season.  As you know, the Lady Colonels open their spring 2019 campaign in Ft. Myers, Florida in March with a ten game slate. Come see a game!
