Men's Soccer Tripped Up By Salve Regina in CCC Opener

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College men's soccer team lost to Salve Regina University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both squads. The loss drops the Colonels to 5-2-1 and 0-1-0 in the CCC on the season while the Seahawks improve to 6-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.

The teams battled each other throughout the first 42 minutes of play without a score.  It was the Salve Regina who struck first and didn't look back. The Seahawks netted their first off a goal from John Julian (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), with the assist going to Jordan Elster (Sutton, Mass.). The goal would be the only scoring by either team during the first half of play.

Salve Regina came out strong in the second adding two more tallies. Their second goal on the afternoon was netted by Conor Woods (Otisville, N.Y.) with the assist going to Evan MacDonald (Candia, N.H.) in the 55th minute. Their final goal came in the 62nd minute as Owen Stevenson (Middletown, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 3-0. The Colonels reeled off three shots in the second half but the strong play between the pipes from Seahawk goalkeeper Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) kept Curry scoreless.

Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) made nine saves in 90 minutes.

Curry returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 19 at home against Framingham State at 6:30 p.m. Salve Regina will next host Coast Guard on Tuesday, September 18 at 5:00 p.m.
