Endicott Pulls Away in Third Period to Defeat Hockey

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team lost a 3-1 decision to visiting No. 8/10 Endicott College on Saturday afternoon at Max Ulin Rink in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. The win improves the Gulls to 12-4-2 overall and 6-4-0 in the CCC. The loss drops the Colonels 10-6-2 overall and 5-4-1 in league play.

Endicott was the first to get on the board in the contest as senior Josh Bowes (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) found the back of the net off assists from sophomore Jake Simons (Coral Springs, Fla.) and junior Michael Heidkamp (Marietta, Ga.). The tally was scored with just eight second left in the frame to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead after one.

The second period saw the game's first penalties and power-play opportunites, but neither team was able to capitalize. Curry had one power-play chance while Endicott finished 0-for-2 on the power-play in the stanza. There were also 24 combined shots in the period (13-11 in favor of the Colonels), but none were able to change the score from 1-0.

The Gulls tacked on two goals at the beginning of the third to extend the margin to 3-0. Just 54 seconds in Simons got in the scoring column with an unassisted marker. They added another a mere 16 seconds after senior Joseph Slovak (South Yarmouth, Mass.) scored with the assist being registered by Bowes.

Curry recorded its first goal of the game 8:26 into the final period. Sophomore Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) netted his first goal of the season, a power-play marker, with the helpers going to sophomore Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) to make the score 3-1, the eventual final.

The Colonels held a 42-25 advantage in shots on the afternoon. Curry went 1-for-4 on the power-play while Endicott was 0-for-3.

Freshman Conor O'Brien (Pinellas Park, Fla.) picked up his eighth victory of the season and made 41 stops in between the pipes for the Gulls. Sophomore Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.) converted 22 saves in 58:48 of game action.

Curry will return to action on Friday, January 25 at home against Nichols College for a CCC matchup at 6:50 p.m. Endicott hosts Becker in its next contest on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
