MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's Hockey team stunned the #4/5 UMass Boston Beacons with a 4-2 victory at home at the Max Ulin Rink on Friday night in Milton. After the win, the Colonels sit at 6-4-2 overall headed into the holiday break, while the Beacons fall to 10-2-0 with a single game left in the semester.

The Colonels struck first as senior forward and team captain Zach White (Milford, Conn.) netted the first goal of the night at 6:44 in the first period to put the hosts on top, converting on an assist by senior Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland). Teddy Bears rained down to the ice following the lamp-lighter, as the Colonels put on their fifth annual "Teddy Bear Toss" to benefit Hockey Cares for Kids. Fans around the rink tossed these bears onto the ice following the Colonel's first goal to help those in need as we celebrate the holiday season. The goal was White's eighth of the season, but he didn't stop there.

UMass Boston knotted the score when they netted one of their own less than a minute later. Junior forward Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.) tied the game with his fifth score of the season and was assisted by seniors Gabe Chuckran (Media, Pa.) and Garrison Sanipass (Northbrook, Ill.). The nets would stay bare until halfway through the second period, when freshman Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) would put Curry back on top for good off of an assist from sophomore Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden). The lead would then get padded by a close-range, unassisted goal by sophomore Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden), beating Beacons goalie Bailey MacBurnie (Beverly, Mass.) stick-side immediately following a Curry line change.

The Beacons would pull the deficit back to one with just under three minutes to go in regulation. Senior David MacGregor (Azusa, Calif.) took a rebound into the nylon, as Jeffrey Skinner (Houston, Texas) was credited with the assist. This kept the Beacons' chances at a comeback very much alive, but these hopes were soon smothered. 52 seconds later, as the Beacons pulled their goalie in favor of an extra man, Mauron won the face-off and the Colonels were able to send the puck into the offensive zone. White put his second goal of the night and ninth of the season into the empty net with a defender closing. This sealed the fate of the match-up, as the captain moved into a tie for second for most goals scored in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, just two behind the leader.

Both teams failed to take advantage of power plays in this one. UMass Boston squashed four opportunities for the hosts, while Curry also went perfect, going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Junior goalie Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) rounded out the defensive side of the total team effort from Curry, letting up just two while saving 25, including 9 in the third frame. The win lifts Ketola's record to 3-2-1. MacBurnie suffered his first loss of the season minding the net, falling to 9-1-0 as he gave up 3 and saved 17.

Curry heads into the holiday break off of the win and will look to carry the momentum into the second semester when they return to the ice on Saturday, January 5 at home against Babson at 4:50 p.m. UMass Boston is back in action tomorrow night in a home tilt against UMass Dartmouth at 4:00 p.m. in their last game before the break.
