Hockey Moves Into Championship Game of Buffalo State Tournament With Shootout Victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team battled Nazareth College to a 2-2 overtime tie on Friday night at the Buffalo State Ice Arena in its season opener at the Buffalo State Tournament. The Colonels advanced to the championship game of the tournament after they edged the Golden Flyers 3-1 in a shootout.

With the tie, Curry moves to 0-0-1 while Nazareth also pushes to 0-0-1.

The Colonels took a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the first period. At the 7:58 mark, sophomore Tristan Morin (Unionville, Conn.) put Curry on the board with the assists going to Tyler Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ontario). They tacked on another goal exactly a minute later as Vilhelm Peltonen (Helsinki, Finland) scored his first collegiate goal off assists from Joe Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Zach White (Milford, Conn.).

Nazareth answered back with two goals of its own in the second period. With 5:19 off the clock, Justin Miller (Franklin, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal off a pass from David Powlowski (Rochester, N.Y.). Mateo Capriotti (Manilus, N.Y.) knotted the contest just over two minutes later with the helpers going to Cody Antonini (Caledonia, Mich.) and Jackson Shanley (Edwards, Colo.).

Despite 20 total shots in the third period, the contest remained tied at two and headed to overtime. The Golden Flyers outshot Curry 9-3 in the overtime periods.

The game moved to a shootout and the Colonels edged Nazareth 2-1 with the goals coming from White and Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland). The lone goal from the Golden Flyers came from Powlowski.

Nazareth outshot Curry 45-31 while the Colonels and held a 32-30 advantage in the faceoff circle. The Colonels were 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Golden Flyers went 0-5.

Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) made 43 saves in net for Curry. Michael Tilford (Traverse City, Mich.) converted 29 stops for Nazareth.

The Colonels advance to the championship game to face the host Bengals on Saturday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. Nazareth will square off against Bryn Athyn in the consolation game at 3:00 p.m.
