Men's Basketball Clipped By Regis in Home Opener, 85-65

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped an 85-65 final to Regis College in its home opener in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the Katz Gymnasium.  

Regis had four players score in double figures led by Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.), who netted a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and one steal. Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) notched 17 points while adding eight rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes. Jordan Seldon (Everett, Mass.) was the final starter scoring in double-figures with 11 points and two assists. Jalil Wilkerson (New Haven, Conn.) added 10 points, three rebounds, two steals, and a block off the bench for the Pride, who improved to 1-1 overall.  

Leading Curry (0-2 overall) was Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) with 16 points and four rebounds. Seth Foley (Bristol, Conn.) was 3-for-6 from three-point land and finished with 11 points off the bench.

Following a jumper from Julius Hemingway (Kissimmee, Fla.) to pull the Colonels to within one but a 10-0 run stretched the lead to 11 at the 9:23 mark of the first half. Afonja knocked down two free throws to stretch the lead to 27-16. Curry was able to pull to within seven of the lead on a made three-point shot from Louis Stein (Mount Olive, N.J.), but that basket was answered with a 6-0 run over the final 2:29 to extend the lead to 13 at the break, 44-31.

The Pride added to its lead in the second half, pushing the Curry deficit to 69-47 with 9:43 remaining in regulation on a made layup from Afonja. The margin stayed at double digits for the rest of the contest as Regis took the contest by 20 points.

It was a hot-shooting night for Regis as they were 50.8 percent (32-for-63) from the floor and went 6-for-13 from beyond the arc. Curry shot 20-for-58 (34.5 percent) from the field and 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from three.

Curry hits the road for a season-high five game road trip starting at the Paula Titus Memorial Tournament hosted by UMass Boston on Friday, November 16 against the host Beacons at 5:00 p.m. Regis heads to the NYU Tip-Off Tournament where they will square off against Baruch College on Saturday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
