Gately Leads Cross Country at Westfield State Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The University of New England juniors Brittney Sorbello and Tiana Thomas finished fourth and sixth, respectively, among more than 400 collegiate runners, leading the Nor'easters to a first-place team finish at the 20th annual James Earley Invitational women's cross country meet at Stanley Park Saturday.  Curry placed 32nd out of the 39 teams competing.

Sorbello finished the five-kilometer course in 18:26, while Thomas crossed the finish line three seconds later.

New England College junior Abby Shafer won the event with a time of 18:04. Anna Harleen, a sophomore at Williams College, came in second place, completing the course in 18:16.

Williams College (2nd), Saint Anslem College (3rd), and Smith College (5th) rounded out the top five.

Curry was led by sophomore Victoria Gately (Hanson, Mass.) who placed 210th with a time of 22:35.  Gately was followed by junior Lydia Hixson (West Hartford, Conn.), who placed 248th with a time of 23:09.  Following Hixson were juniors Rachel Smith (Arlington, Mass.), 24:11 (297th) who ran her personal best, Meghan Macleod (Brewster, Mass.), 24:14 (301st) and Emilee Purdy (Franklin, Mass.), 25:14 (333rd).

Curry heads to Emmanuel College on Friday, October 16 to compete in the Emmanuel College Invitational that begins at 4:00 p.m. (Meet Recap Courtesy of Westfield State Sports Information)
