Erickson Leads Cross Country in Western New England Golden Bears Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State women's cross country team earned first place honors in the 5-kilometer race, while Salve Regina and Roger Williams finished at second and third on Saturday morning in the Western New England Golden Bears Invitational.

Westfield State came in first place with 41 points, followed by Salve Regina (64), Roger Williams (136), Gordon (158), Endicott (163), Worcester (181), Colby-Sawyer (208), Clark (211), Norwich (287) and Western New England (292), who finished in the top ten out of 23 teams competing.

Curry placed 18th out of the 23 teams, with four of the five Colonels achieving personal best records. Out of a field of approximately 213 runners, two of Curry's freshmen finished in the top100. Curry was led by freshman Megan Erickson (Westbrook, Conn.), who finished in 81st place with a time of 22:00 (PR).  Other Curry finishers were freshman Leigha Sweeney (Braintree, Mass.), 22:05 (83rd  PR), sophomore Jessica Leary (Pembroke, Mass.), 23:19 (110th), sophomore Melanie Berube (Beverly, Mass.), 25:32 (163rd PR) and sophomore Victoria Norton (Fairfield, Conn.), 27:10 (184th PR). Co-Captains and juniors Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H) and Jacquelyn Young (Randolph, Mass.) were unable to compete but were at the meet to encourage their teammates throughout the race.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, October 27 for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship (time and place TBA).
