Erickson Leads Cross Country at the Gordon College Pop Crowell Invitational

WENHAM, Mass. – The Wellesley College women's cross country team earned first place honors in the women's 5-kilometer race, while Westfield State and Bates finished at second and third on Saturday morning's Gordon College Pop Crowell Invitational.

For the women, Wellesley finished in first place with 51 points, followed by Westfield (98), Bates (100), St. Anselm (128), University of New England (164), Lesley (176), Salve Regina (192), Southern New Hampshire (271), Roger Williams (280) and Endicott (308), who finished in the top ten out of 30 teams competing. 

The Colonels placed 20th out of 30 teams, maintaining a comparable position to last years race while competing with fewer runners. Out of a field of approximately 300 runners, two of Curry’s freshmen finished in the top 100.Curry was led by freshman Megan Erickson (Westbrook, Conn.), who finished in 88th place with a time of 21:13.  Other Curry finishers were freshman Leigha Sweeney (Braintree, Mass.), 21:28 (99th), sophomore Jessica Leary (Pembroke, Mass.), who performed her best time at 22:13 (116th), sophomore Melanie Berube (Beverly, Mass.), who despite injuries made a sacrifice for her team to compete and earn an overall score, came in at 25:37 (159th) and sophomore Victoria Norton (Fairfield, Conn.), 27:55 (173rd). Co-Captains and juniors Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H) and Jacquelyn Young (Randolph, Mass.) were unable to compete but were at the meet to encourage their teammates throughout the race.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, October 13 when they travel to Western New England in the Western New England Invitational for a 10:30 a.m. start.  (Race Recap Courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
