Bell Notches 1,000th Dig as Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Fisher

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team grounded the Falcons of Fisher College on Monday evening. The win is the Colonels' seventh straight, extending a program record, and puts their overall record at 9-3. After the defeat, the Falcons sit at 2-7.

The Colonels opened the match in exciting fashion as on the eighth point of the game, Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) put away a kill to give the hosts a 5-3 lead. On the play, senior Lex Bell (Salem, Conn.) recorded the 1,000th dig of her collegiate career between Mount Ida and Curry College. The Colonels continued to roll, as another kill by Pereira extended their advantage to 11-5. The Falcons benefitted from a Curry attack error that pulled the score to 20-13, but the hosts earned the next five points to take the first frame.

The Colonels wasted no time in getting to work in the second set, grabbing a 9-2 edge right out of the gates. Shortly later, back-to-back Fisher attack errors gave Curry a 17-5 lead and prompted a Falcon timeout. Out of the break, the visitors took three straight points, but the deficit would be too much to overcome as Curry closed out another set by a score of 25-13.

Looking for the sweep, Curry jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in set three, before a six-point serving run by Jordyn Keith (Whitman, Mass.) brought the advantage to 12-5. A kill by Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, Calif.) broke the streak, but another Curry run, this time with Pereira at the service line, brought the Colonels to match point at 24-8. The Falcons held off the seemingly inevitable for four consecutive points, but a service error ended the rally and closed out the match for Curry with a 25-12 win in the final stanza.

With her 12 kills tonight, Pereira topped all players and broke the century mark for the season. Bell turned in a match high 31 assists while fellow senior captain Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) led the way with 17 digs. Topping the Falcons offense was Huerta with seven kills, while setter Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, P.R.) led the team in digs (12) and helpers (14).

The Colonels will look to push their win streak to eight as they travel to face Mass. Maritime at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25. In their first meeting of the year on September 12, Curry topped the Buccaneers 3-0. The Falcons get back on the court for two matches at Maine – Fort Kent on Saturday, September 28. The pair of matches between Fisher and the Bengals are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
