Women's Volleyball Falls 3-1 at Mount Ida in Non-Conference Action

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College jumped out to a two set lead and then held off visiting Curry College as Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine) broke the program's single-match assists record in a non-conference women's volleyball game on Thursday evening at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

Davis registered 49 assists for the Mustangs (10-12), who improve to 4-0 all-time against Curry with scores of 31-29, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-21. The senior setter broke the previous record of 45 assists, set last year against Lasell by Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.).

Mount Ida turned in a strong all-around performance from their hitters, including freshman Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.), who set a new personal best with 20 kills.

The Mustangs came from a 10-3 deficit in a wild first set, finally taking a lead at 22-21 thanks to back to back service aces by Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.), who had four of the Mustang's 16 aces and a team-high 19 digs. Mount Ida staved off game point four straight times in the first set before a kill from Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.), a kill from Walton, and a service ace by Reidy put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.

Reidy posted 17 kills and ten digs in the Mount Ida victory, and junior Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) had 11 kills with just one error for a .455 hitting percentage to go with three block assists.

Both the second and fourth matches saw the Mustangs pull off 5-0 runs in the middle of the match to seize the lead for good, while it was the Colonels who turned a 14-9 deficit into a 20-17 advantage en route to a third-set victory.

Sophomore Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) led the visitors with 13 kills, while Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) had nine kills and a service ace for Curry.

A two-setter offense for the Colonels saw Makayla Hughes (Franklin, N.H.) tally 20 assists and Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) had 14 assists, to go with two aces, eight digs and seven kills.

Junior Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) had seven kills for the Mustangs and also served four aces while recording 11 digs. Reidy and Walton were each in double-digits in the dig category for Mount Ida, who had 65 digs as a team.

Mount Ida returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday when they travel to Simmons for a 12:00 pm match.

Curry (8-10) returns to conference play as well on Saturday with a 1:00 pm match at Wentworth. (Recap courtesy of Mount Ida Sports Information)
