Women's Volleyball Captures First-Ever League Win, Defeating Visiting Gordon 3-1

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated visiting Gordon College, 3-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action Wednesday night in Milton. Set scores were 15-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 26-24. Curry women's volleyball, which began as a varsity program in 2011, notched its first-ever league win. The Colonels improved to 7-18 on the season and 1-6 in CCC action. The Fighting Scots slipped to 10-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Gordon hit a blistering .381 in the opening set and came out on top, 25-15. Curry bounced back in the second set, committing just one attack error, and ran away with a 25-14 decision. The Colonels maintained a narrow but steady lead throughout the third set and emerged with a four-point win. In a dramatic fourth set, Curry overcame a 15-6 deficit, outscoring the Fighting Scots 20-9 down the stretch to secure the victory.

Senior Christina Wallis, playing in her last home match with the Colonels, contributed eight kills. Sophomore Nicole Grambley (No. Attleboro, Mass.) put down a match-high 14 kills. Classmate Makayla Hughes (Franklin, N.H.) dished out 24 assists and had three service aces. Freshman Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) recorded a match-best seven blocks (4 solo, 3 assisted), while classmate Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) amassed a match-high 21 digs.

The Fighting Scotts were led by senior classmates Joy Kimmel (Madison Conn.), with a match-high 33 helpers; and Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa), with a team-leading 13 kills. Senior Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) chipped in with 18 digs. Junior Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) served up a match-high four aces.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, as Curry travels to Beverly, Mass. for a tri-match, facing host Endicott at 11:00 a.m. and then Salem State at 1:00 p.m.  Gordon will host CCC opponent Eastern Nazarene at 11:00 a.m.
