Women's Soccer Battles Western New England to a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team tied the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England, 1-1, in double overtime on Saturday morning at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the tie, the Colonels clinched a spot in the CCC tournament.  They are now 6-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the CCC.  The Golden Bears are 9-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the CCC.

The squads played an evenly matched 24:20 minutes in the opening stanza.  Each netminder played strong between the pipes to keep their teams tied at zero.  The Golden Bears however took the lead at the 20:40 minute mark off a corner kick.  Western New England's freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Cummings (Feeding Hills, Mass.) took the corner kick which sailed over the head of senior goaltender Haley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.).  Cummings goal was the first and only in the half.  The Colonels had their chances to tie it before half-time but the Golden Bears sophomore goaltender Briana Kubik (Blandford, Mass.) came up with big stops to hold Curry scoreless.

Curry had with seven shots, five on net, zero corners and one foul. Western New England had seven shots, four on net, five corners and three fouls.

Curry came out strong to begin the second half pressuring Western New England's defense and landing solid shots on net forcing Kubik to make big stops.  Just 10:08 in, the Colonels were awarded a corner kick.  Sophomore midfielder Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) took the corner and in a similar way as the Golden Bears, scored off it unassisted.  Kubik got a touch on the ball but wasn't able to make the catch for the save.  That tied the score at one apiece.  The sides battled back and forth with both trying to notch the game-winner, but they were unsuccessful which forced overtime.

The teams played hard during both overtimes.  With the wind blowing hard, a lot of the shots taken were outside the 18-yard box and on net.  Lorge and Kubik however were focused and determined to not allow another tally for the opposing squad to walk away with the victory.  After 110:00 minutes of play, the game ended with a 1-1 tie.

Curry finished with 21 shots, 13 on net, four corners and five fouls.  Western New England ended with 16 shots, 11 on net, six corners and 11 fouls.

Lorge made 10 saves in net for the Colonels. The Golden Bears Kubik made 12 stops in net.

The Colonel's will host conference opponent Nichols College on Tuesday, October 29 for a 6:30 p.m. match. Western New England will host conference opponent Roger Williams on Wednesday, October 30 for a 3:00 p.m. game.
