Women's Soccer Absorbs 1-0 Loss to Conference Rival Wentworth

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College lost to Wentworth University, 0-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action on Saturday morning in Milton.  With the loss, the Colonels fall to 3-3-1 on the season and even their record at 1-1 in the CCC.  The Leopards now hold an overall record of 2-5-1 and 1-1 in the conference.

Wentworth scored the first and only tally of the game at the 39:48 minute mark.  Freshman Valeria Zapata (Pawtucket, R.I.) put the Leopards ahead 1-0 after she dribbled the ball past two Colonel defenders and went one-on-one with Curry’s senior goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.).  Zapata saw an empty corner of the net and one-timed it into the back past Hardy for the score and eventual game-winner.  Both teams battled throughout the rest of the frame but Wentworth was able to keep the one goal lead heading into the break.

The Colonels finished the half with 10 shots, seven on net, three fouls and one offside.  The Leopards finished with eight shots, seven on net, one corner, three fouls and two offside.

Hardy made six saves and Wentworth’s senior netminder Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made seven stops in the half.

Curry stepped up their play in the second half and controlled most of the play.  While the Colonels only outshot the Leopards by two in the first 45 minutes of the game, they had 19 in the final half to the Leopards seven.  Just 12 of those shots however landed on net and Gardner was solid between the pipes to keep Curry scoreless.  Junior Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) had a chance to tie the game with just less than five minutes to play when she had a direct shot in front of the net, but Gardner was there for the stop.

The Colonels outshot the Leopards 29-15 in the loss.  Curry also put 19 shots on goal, had five corners, and five fouls.  Wentworth finished with 11 shots on net, one corner, and three fouls.

Hardy earned the loss for the Colonels making 10 saves.  Gardner made 19 saves in net for Wentworth in their team’s first conference win of the season.

The Colonels will host Fitchburg State on Tuesday, September 25 for a 5:30 p.m. kick off.  Wentworth hosts W.P.I., also on Tuesday, at 7:00 p.m.
