Women's Lacrosse Downs Salve Regina University 19-12 in Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team defeated Salve Regina University, 19-12 on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 6-3 overall and even out to 1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).  The Seahawks fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in the CCC.

Junior classmates Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) and Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) led the way for Curry both scoring five goals and recording one and two assists respectively. Senior Alexis Cran (Branford, Conn.) was right behind the pair scoring four goals with junior Rachel Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) netting a pair. Junior classmates Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) and Abby Carnevale (Beverly, Mass.) along with sophomore Brooke Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) all scored once for the Colonels.

Salve Regina was led by junior Courtney Moulton (Merrimack, N.H.) who scored five goals as well, tying a game-high. She was followed by senior classmates Katherine Miele (North Reading, Mass.) and Erin Gerhard (Scituate, Mass.) who both scored a pair of goals. Junior Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn.), sophomore Megan Grier (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Lindsey Smith (North Attleboro, Mass.) rounded out the score sheet, each scoring once for the Seahawks.

Gillespie started the scoring early on in the first half but Curry responded by scoring three unanswered goals, two from Knowlton and another from Parker to put the score at 3-1 after three and a half minutes. Gerhard snapped the streak only for another Colonel run, this time four unanswered goals from Carroll and Lawrence on top of a pair from Parker.

The teams would end the half trading pairs of goals twice over the last 19 and a half minutes. Gerhard and Moulton teamed up before Cran and Knowlton responded only to have Smith and Moulton put the score back to a three goal difference at 9-6. Knowlton and Carnevale had the last laugh and ended the scoring with two and a half minutes to play to put the score at 11-6 at intermission.

Curry continued to net goals, coming out with three unanswered to start the second half coming from Cran Lawrence and Parker. Moulton responded for Salve and Parker answered her goal and Miele answered Parker. Cran scored twice before the Seahawks scored a trio of unanswered goals on their own coming from Moulton on an man-up advantage, then Miele scored before Moulton netted another one. Knowlton answered and Harrington followed a minute later before Grier ended the scoring with just over three minutes left putting the score to its eventual final in 19-12.

The Colonels senior goalkeeper Annie Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) made ten saves in her sixth win on the season while Salve senior net minder Katie Johnson (Derry N.H.) recorded 11 saves on her way to taking the loss.

Curry is next in action on Wednesday afternoon as they host conference rival Endicott College for a 7 p.m. start while the Seahawks travel to UMASS Dartmouth next on Monday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference match up.
