MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team claimed its final non-conference contest of the season on Saturday, topping Fitchburg State University by a 63-57 final. The Colonels improve to 6-4 overall while the Falcons fall to 3-7.

Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) led two Curry student-athletes in double figures with a game-high 28 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, nine steals, and one block in the near-triple-double performance in 39 minutes of action. Taylor McNair (Oxford, Conn.) pitched in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 20 minutes. Janee Walker (Pittsfield, Mass.) was the leading scorer off the bench with seven.

Fitchburg State's Emma Thomson (York, Maine) and Allysa Rivera (Chelsea, Mass.) poured in a team-high 13 points apiece. Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) was the final Falcon in double figures with 11. Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 18 boards and led the squad with three assists.  

Curry held a narrow 7-6 advantage nearly halfway through the first quarter. Following a hoop plus a foul shot from Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.), the Colonels lead would reach five at 11-6. After a free throw from Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) to push the lead to six, Fitchburg State answered with a 7-0 run over the final 3:41 to grab a 13-12 edge after one quarter of play.  

The Falcons led by as many as seven in the second stanza, but the Colonels would respond. Curry chipped away at the deficit and went into the intermission down by three when Thomson knocked down a three with 11 seconds left in the half, 29-26.

The Colonels hung around at the beginning of the third quarter, cutting the Fitchburg State lead to as few as one when Irwin converted both shots from the charity stripe with 1:50 to go in the frame. Marazzi came back with a free throw of her own to give the Falcons a two-point lead after three, 48-46.

A quick 9-0 run after Fitchburg opened with the first basket gave Curry a five-point lead with 6:42 left in regulation. The Colonels' lead reached as many as 10 before the Falcons made a late charge. Two shots from distance taken by Rivera found the bottom of the net in the late stages of the quarter, but that would not be enough as Curry took the contest by the six-point margin.

Curry will next play on Thursday, January 4 when they travel to Salve Regina for a 5:00 p.m. contest. Fitchburg State will host Nichols on Tuesday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. for their next game.
