Women’s Basketball Falls to UNE in CCC Play, 62-27

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England restricted Curry College to just 15 percent shooting (9-for-60) during a 62-27 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory on Wednesday night (Feb. 8) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With their 11th consecutive positive result, the Nor'easters (17-5, 13-2 CCC) remain in one game back of the top spot in the league standings with three contests left. The Colonels see their four-game win streak come to an end, dipping to 9-13 overall and 7-8 in CCC action.

UNE -- which has taken the last 17 meetings between the teams -- was led by Sadie Nelson (Windham, Maine) with 13 points off the bench, including nine in the 3rd quarter. Alicia Brown (Greenland, N.H.) and Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) each notched 10 points; Brown also collected eight rebounds. Kristie McNall (Wakefield, Mass.) added eight points for the hosts, who shot 38 percent from the floor in the match.

Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) pulled down a game-best nine boards, as the Nor'easters finished with a 53-39 advantage on the glass.

Curry was guided by Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) and Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) with nine points apiece. Irwin also had six steals and four assists, and Molly Plunkett grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Although the offense struggled (3-of-15 shooting) in the second, the defense completely stifled the Colonels heading into halftime. Big Blue held a 26-10 cushion at intermission, after limiting Curry to 0-of-11 shooting and forcing eight turnovers in the frame.

The Nor'easters continued to extend the gap in the third, knocking down 7-of-13 field-goal tries, and nearly doubled-up the visitors again in the fourth.

UNE will honor its senior class on Saturday (1 p.m.) against Eastern Nazarene College (8-7 CCC). At the same time, the Colonels are slated to entertain Western New England University (11-4 CCC).
