Women's Basketball Fends Off MCLA, Defeats Trailblazers, 65-55

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The visiting Curry College women's basketball team received 17 points and nine rebounds from Paige Senatore (Ayer, Mass.) as they pulled away from the MCLA Trailblazers 65-55 this afternoon in non-conference action.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 2-3 on the season while MCLA drops to 2-2.

Heading into the fourth quarter tied at 44, Curry scored the opening five points as Senatore drilled a three pointer to give them a 49-44 edge with nine minutes left.  Curry would hold the lead the rest of the way and eventually jump out to a 56-47 lead when Erica Ulrich (Westminster, Mass.) scored five straight points with five minutes left to play.

MCLA wouldn't go quietly as they converted a pair of steals into buckets and sliced the margin to just 56-51 with 3:36 left to play.  Another Curry turnover gave MCLA a chance to crawl closer, however a missed layup from Courtney McLaughlin (Pittsfield, Mass.) was followed by Senatore's final three pointer of the afternoon making it 59-51 with just 2:36 left.

MCLA wouldn't get any closer than six the rest of the way as Curry would convert six of eight free throws over the final two minutes to pull away with the win.

Senatore was just 5-16 from the floor but was 3-6 from beyond the arc for her game-high 17 points.  Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) added 12 points while Ulrich ended with 10 off the bench for Curry.  All of Ulrich's points came in the final twenty minutes of play.  Curry overcame 20 turnovers in the win and shot 43% from the floor.

MCLA was paced by 14 points off the bench from Karina Mattera (Johnston, R.I.). McLaughlin added 11 points, 10 of which came in the second half.  Emily Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) scored 9 points, all of which were in the first half of play.  The Trailblazers were hampered by 20 turnovers of their own and shot a respectable 41% from the floor.

MCLA will be back in action on Monday night when they host Lasell College at 7 p.m. Curry continues their season long four-game road trip Wednesday, November 30 when they open up CCC play at Endicott at 5:30 p.m.
