MILTON, Mass.—MIT captured the title in the 2016 Curry College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament, knocking off the host Colonels, 76-42. Earlier in the day, Trinity College defeated Pine Manor College, 71-46, in the consolation game.

TRINITY 71, PINE MANOR 46

The Bantams outscored the Bantams in every quarter to give way to a 71-46 victory over Pine Manor. Trinity was led by Rebecca Reifler (Garden City, N.Y.) who led the Bantams with 14 points. The sophomore also tallied eight boards on the night.

Trinity entered the first half intermission with a 16 point lead and shot 8-for-16 (50%) and 7-for-12 (58%) in the first and second quarters, respectively.

Pine Manor was led by All-Tournament Team representative Shaneka Monroe (Jersey City, N.J.) who paced the Gators with a game-high 16 points.

The Bantams continued in the second half and increased their lead to as many as 63-35 with 7:38 remaining in regulation. They held a 30 rebound advantage (52-22) in the contest and also held advantages in assists (14), points off turnovers (25), second chance points (14) as well as points in the paint and bench points.

Pine Manor shot 31.4% from the floor while posting 13 points off turnovers and 12 points in the paint.

Trinity returns to the hardwood on Trinity next Sunday when they travel to St. Joseph for a 1 p.m. tip. Pine Manor will next play Tuesday at Eastern Nazarene at 7:00 p.m.

MIT 76, CURRY 42

MIT shot a blistering 51.5% from the field in the first half to capture the Curry College Tip Off Tournament Title over the host Colonels by a final of 76-42. Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) and Kara Holinski paced the Engineers with 14 points apiece. The two led a total of four MIT players in double figures.

The Colonels were led by Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass) who posted a stat line of 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals on the afternoon. Her two-game effort on the court helped her garner All-Tournament Team honors.

Joining Irwin on the All-Tournament Team was freshman Sam Bamford (Easton, Mass.). She was the second leading scorer in the MIT game with nine points. She also recorded four rebounds, three assists and five steals on the afternoon.

MIT shot 56% in the second half, leading to the 34 point victory. Curry shot 25% from the floor in the contest compared to a 53.6 clip for the Engineers. The Colonels held the advantage on the free throw line, hitting eight of their 10 attempts. 

Curry returns to action at home on Tuesday when they play host to Johnson & Wales. The game is slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m. MIT will travel to Bowdoin on Sunday, November 27 at 2 p.m.
