MILTON, Mass. – Curry College topped visiting Gordon College, 59-31, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball match-up Thursday night in Milton. The Colonels improved to 7-4 on the season and remained unbeaten in CCC action at 5-0, while the Fighting Scots fell to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Curry never trailed in the contest, although Gordon stayed close in the first half. A layup by junior Kerry White (Windham, N.H.) gave the Colonels a 28-14 lead at 1:59 of the opening frame. The Fighting Scots then closed the half on a 6-2 run and entered the break trailing 30-20.
The hosts went on to dominate the second half, shooting 60% from the field to just 22% for Gordon.
Senior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) led Curry with a game-high 23 points and a team-best four steals. Junior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) also pulled down seven rebounds for the Colonels, who out-rebounded the Fighting Scots, 40-21.
Gordon was led by senior Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who recorded team highs in points (11) and steals (6). Freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) contributed nine points and a team-best six rebounds.
Both teams resume conference play on Saturday, with Curry traveling to Endicott for a 3:00 p.m. contest and Gordon hosting Salve Regina for a 1:00 p.m. game.
