Women's Basketball Tripped Up By UMass Dartmouth, 67-61, in Consolation Game of Curry Tip-Off Tourney
MILTON, Mass. – Fitchburg State captured the title at the Curry College Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Tournament, defeating Maine Maritime, 80-68, in the championship game. In the consolation game, the host Colonels fell to UMass Dartmouth, 67-61.

UMASS DARTMOUTH 67, CURRY 61

Curry opened the game with an 11-3 run that was capped off with a three-point play by freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.). UMD responded with a 29-4 run that was finished with a layup by sophomore Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) to give the Corsairs’ their biggest lead of the game (32-15) with 5:01 remaining in the first half. With 10 seconds left in the first period, Colonels’ freshman Maria Giuffrida (Leicester, Mass.) sank a three-pointer to trim the deficit to seven (36-29) at the break.

Curry pulled within two (56-54) after an 8-0 run that spanned from 6:10 to 4:08 left in the second half that was capped off by a Beltz jumper, but couldn’t manage to complete its comeback as UMD went on to score 11 of the game’s final 18 points.

Junior Colleen Moriarty (Canton, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Bournemann also recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) contributed 14 points, while senior Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, Mass.) scored 11.

The Colonels were led by junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) with a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double effort. Beltz added 19 points, while junior Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in with 13.

FITCHBURG STATE 80, MAINE MARITIME 68

Fitchburg built its biggest lead of the first half (24-11) after a layup by senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass.) with 9:31 left in the period. Maine Maritime pulled within one (36-35) after junior Kari Jones (Nobleboro, Maine) sank a shot from beyond the arc with 2:24 remaining before intermission. The Falcons went on to close out the first half with a 6-0 run that was capped off by a Goreham jump shot to take a 42-35 lead at the break.

Fitchburg State took its biggest lead of the game (52-37) after a layup by sophomore Jackie Boffoli (Holden, Mass.) with 15:44 left in regulation. With 7:50 left in the second period, the Mariners cut the lead to seven (61-54) after senior Sam Goda (Eliot, Maine) hit a pair from the charity stripe. The Falcons held Maine Maritime to seven points for the remainder of the game on their way to the 80-68 victory.

Sophomore Amy Fahey led Fitchburg with a game-high 28 points, along with 13 rebounds. Goreham also recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points.

The Mariners were led by Goda with 19 points. Junior Casey Everest (Portland, Maine) added 16 points, while senior Maggie Smith (Bath, Maine) contributed 15. Goda, Everest and junior Alexis Bennett (Freedom, Maine) pulled down eight boards apiece.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were: Rebecca Goreham (Fitchburg State), Amy Fahey (Fitchburg State), Sam Goda (Maine Maritime), Maggie Smith (Maine Maritime), Kelsey Garrity (UMass Dartmouth) and Hailey Rafferty (Curry).
