Second-Half Surge Lifts Women's Basketball Past Nichols, 81-57

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Curry College women’s basketball team exploded with 47 second-half points to earn an 81-57 victory over Nichols in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) matchup Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Colonels improve to 3-4 in conference play and 13-5 overall, while the Bison fall to 1-6 in the conference and 7-11 for the season.

Nichols senior Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) came out on fire from beyond the arc. Robidoux made her first three shots all from three-point range within the first nine minutes of play, but the Colonels led, 18-15. Robidoux finished the game with 14 points.

Another Nichols senior, Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.), started off hot. Nelson scored the Bison’s first six points, had eight at the half and finished the game with 14 points as well.

Curry remained ahead for the majority of the half, making seven of their first nine shots and shooting just over 45% for the half, but went 1-for-10 from three-point range. Despite their struggles from beyond the arc, the Colonels took a 34-31 lead into the locker room.

Both teams came out ready to play in the second frame, trading baskets for the first few minutes, but it was Curry that kept up the intensity. Led by senior Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, Maine), the Colonels were finally able to pull away when they went on a 14-0 run that began at 10:28 of the half and lasted almost five minutes. Cousins had 15 second-half points and finished with a game-high 22.

The Colonels had five players in double-digit scoring as Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) added 16 and Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in with 14. Senior Cortney Robinson dominated on the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds and added seven points and a game-high five assists. As a team, Curry was all over the glass, out-rebounding the Bison, 42-25, and holding a 44-20 advantage in points in the paint.

Nichols will travel to Paxton, Mass. to take on conference foe Anna Maria on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Curry will travel north to Henniker, N.H., continuing conference play against New England College at 6 p.m. Wednesday. (Game recap courtesy of Nichols Sports Information)
