Women's Basketball Drops a 71-66 Decision at Conference Rival Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women’s basketball team rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Colonels of Curry College, 71-66, on Wednesday evening.  The Chargers improve to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Curry falls to 9-5 overall and 0-4 in TCCC play.

Senior Katelyn Stravinsky led all players with 17 points and sophomore Taylor DeSanty added 16 to pace the Chargers in their third win in the last four games.

The Chargers jumped out to an early eight-point lead in the first half with DeSanty and sophomore point guard Cailin Bullett each hitting three-pointers. However, a combined 22 first-half points from Curry’s Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) and Katie King (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped away at the Chargers’ lead and helped the Colonels finish the first half on a 6-0 run to lead 36-30.

The second half began with the Colonels extending their lead to seven when senior guard Joneiha Veiga (Brockton, Mass.) hit the team’s only three-point basket of the game. Colby-Sawyer was sparked by back-to-back baskets by junior Kaitlin Fifield and pulled within two. After a Stravinsky missed three- pointer, freshman Mari Meserve grabbed one of her 10 rebounds on the night and scored a lay-up to tie the game at 42-42. The teams battled back and forth for the next seven minutes with neither gaining more than a three-point edge until the Chargers went on a 10-0 run with four minutes remaining to push ahead by eight, 61-53. The Chargers secured the victory by shooting 9-for-11 from the free-throw line over the final four minutes to win 71-66.

Stravinsky led all Chargers with her 17 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Cailin Bullett had a team high five assists and added 11 points. Mari Meserve and Kaitlin Fifield each had 10 rebounds in the win.

The Colonels were led by senior Cortney Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) who had a double-double with 11 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Scrubb had 12 points and King had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Colby-Sawyer will travel to Nichols on Saturday for a 2:00 pm tip, while Curry will host Gordon at 1:00 pm also on Saturday. (Game recap courtesy of Colby-Sawyer Sports Information)
