Second-Half Lead Slips Away As WBB Falls to Rivier, 61-54

MILTON, Mass. – Rivier College held Curry scoreless over the game’s final eight minutes to notch a 61-54 come-from-behind win in non-conference women’s basketball action Thursday night in Milton. The Raiders (11-3) extended their win streak to six, while the Colonels fell to 5-8.

Curry had the lead in the beginning of the first half until the Raiders took the lead at 10:39 (18-16) on a pair of free throws by freshman forward Mackenzie Brooks (Colebrook, NH). The Colonels regained the lead at 4:33 on a layup by junior forward Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, ME). Curry held a slim 31-28 advantage at the break.

The Colonels led in the second half until 14:21 when senior guard Monica White (Augusta, ME) hit a three-pointer that put the Raiders up 39-38. Curry regained the lead at 10:06 on a Cousins’ layup (47-46). Cousins scored what proved to be the Colonels’ last points, a pair of free throws at 8:16 that gave the hosts a 54-48 edge. A 13-0 Raiders’ run over the final eight minutes gave the visitors the victory.

Purcell was the game-high scorer with 16 points, including 10 of 12 from the charity stripe. White chipped in with 10 points. Senior forward Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) pulled down a game-best 12 rebounds.

Curry was led by Cousins who scored 14 points. Junior forwards Jennifer Olejnik (Salem, MA) and Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA) each contributed 11 points. Cousins and senior guard Liz Forte (Rutland, VT) shared team-high honors with six rebounds apiece.

Both teams return to action this Saturday in 1:00 p.m. contests. Curry will host Regis College, while Rivier will travel to St. Joseph’s College (Maine).
