Curry College Softball - Fall 2017 Summary

The Softball Team wins the 19th Alumni Softball Game

1997 and 1998 Championship Teams Honored

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Softball Program held its 19th Alumni game on Sunday, September 24. There were 19 softball alumni who returned to the diamond ready for action. A pre-game ceremony took place honoring the 1997 and 1998 CCC Softball Champion Teams.  Hard to believe that 20 years have passed since these championships were won.  Coach Weckworth was pleased to have these teams recognized for their greatness and character.  Two game balls were thrown out to start the game by Taylor Henagan-Regan (daughter of Tracy Henagan-Regan '91) and our Team IMPACT girl, Lauren Dunn.

The alumni squad could only muster 8 hits throughout the game and scored three of their four runs off the hits of recent graduate Marissa Bruno '17.  Bruno had three hits on the day, while Paige Smigiel '14 had two hits and scored two runs.  The pitching duties for the current team were nicely handled by Becca Black '18, Allison May '21 and Taylor Newcomb '21.  The solid pitching efforts of Amy Surran Talbot '01 and Amanda Peters '11 kept the alumni team in the game until the bottom of the 5th inning. With one out, the current team put together a big inning that featured 5 hits and was aided by 4 defensive errors, as they sent 13 batters to the plate, yielding 8 runs breaking open a 4-4 game. The final score ended up 14-4 in favor of the current team which had 13 hits on the day.  Leading the way for the Colonels with 2 hits apiece were, Madeline Critch '20, Hailey Powers '21, Allison May '21 and Taylor Newcomb '21.

It was a reunion of former Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Star players and members of the Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame.  Michelle Maiocca Belmonte '98, Leanne Tarkanian '00, and Nicole Leckie Breton '01 along with many other great players, enjoyed the day of softball. It certainly was an exciting game with plenty of laughs as well.  Coach Weckworth was also pleased to have several potential recruits in the stands checking out the festivities. A post-game pizza picnic for about 110 people was held at the field to wrap up the day.

The Curry College Softball Program would like to thank all the players who made it back for this great day of softball and would like to invite you to attend some of our games in the Spring.  Perhaps one more Spring Break Trip to Ft. Myers, Florida would do the trick.  If you were unable to make it to the Alumni Game this year, plan on joining us next year.  It's a really good time!

NESU Softball Classic – Saturday, September 30, 2017

The Curry College Softball Program participated in the NESU Softball Classic on Saturday, September 30 in Swansea, Mass.  This annual tournament serves as an additional way to evaluate "veteran" NESU softball umpires and college softball umpiring candidates.  The Colonels played two of their three fall games as allowed by the NCAA for their non-traditional season but were rained out in the final contest.

They matched up well against Becker College and Bridgewater State University.  With some timely hitting, solid defense and strong pitching, the Colonels split the two games.  Families were the MVP's of the day as they brought some amazing food to feed the team during the afternoon break before the rain washed out the remainder of the afternoon.

The coaching staff is excited about the effort and the results from the day.  They want to see this level of play continued into the spring season.  As you know, the Lady Colonels open their Spring 2018 campaign in Ft. Myers, Florida in March with a ten game slate. Come see a game!
