Softball Splits With Bridgewater State in Non-Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team earned a doubleheader split with Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at the D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels took game one by a 2-1 final and then the Bears responded with a 3-0 in the nightcap. Curry now sits at 15-17 overall while Bridgewater State moves to 10-18 on the season.

GAME ONE

The Colonels got on the board quickly, striking for one in the bottom of the first inning. Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to left field and advanced to second on a throw. On the same play, Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) advanced to third and then scored on an error by Breanna Shaffer (Plainville, Mass.).

The next scoring would come in the sixth, thanks to solo shot to center field from Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) to make it a 2-0 ball game.

The Bears cut their deficit in half in the seventh after Courtney Gouveia (Taunton, Mass.) hit a two out single to center to plate Julianne Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.). The contest closed out with a Shaffer fly out to center.

Bruno and Byrd led Curry with two hits apiece. Colleran and Hanna Fleming (Clinton, Mass.) had the other two hits for the home team. Shaffer was the lone Bridgewater State student-athlete with multiple hits (2). Four others had one hit each for the Bears.

Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) picked up the win in the circle for the Colonels. The junior tossed a complete game while allowing only one run on four hits. She struck out two and walked one to record her fifth win of the season. Mackenzie Holt (Gilroy, Calif.) was credited with the loss for the Bears. She went six innings and surrendered two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking just one.

GAME TWO

Bridgewater State's Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.) tossed her first shutout of the season as the Bears took game two by a 3-0 final.

The contest remained scoreless until the sixth when Shaffer singled to right field and then advanced to second on an error by Morgan Bogardus (Cortlandt Manor, goN.Y.). She then advanced to third and then scored on an error by Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.). Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass.) manufactured a sacrifice to center, which scored Kacie Carvalho (Fairhaven, Mass.) to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Bears added an insurance tally in the top of the seventh. Carvalho singled to short and the ball was deep enough to score Gouveia to make the final score 3-0.

Korona led Curry with a 2-for-3 game two at the plate. Bruno, Jess Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) and Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) recorded a hit each to close that column. Bridgewater State was paced by Carvalho, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Five others recorded a hit for the Bears.

Bailey recorded the victory in the circle, going the distance while only allowing five hits. She struck out three and walked one for her seventh victory of the season. The loss was credited to Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) after she went six and a third innings while giving up three runs on eight hits. She also struck out two in the loss.

Curry will play its regular season home finale on Saturday when they welcome in Salve Regina for a doubleheader beginning at one. The program will honor their three seniors in a Senior Day ceremony. Bridgewater State returns home to host MCLA in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
