Softball Goes 1-1 on Day 1 of CCC Tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. – On Day 1 of the double-elimination phase of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament, the third-seeded Curry College Softball team went 1-1, defeating #6 Roger Williams, 5-2, in the first game of the day before falling to #2 Salve Regina 10-0 in five innings. The Colonels will next play #4 University of New England at Endicott College on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

In the victory over the Hawks, Megan Flaherty scored the first run of the game for Curry (24-16) in the bottom of the first. She reached on an infield single, then moved over to second on a sacrifice. A wide throw to first on a grounder to second allowed Melissa Bruno to reach first and Flaherty to score to give Curry a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks would manage to tie the game in the third. Taylor Messier hit a one-out double to center field, then was scored on an RBI single by Veronica Alicea. The Hawks managed to take the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Messier, driving a ball to deep right center to bring home pinch-runner Bethany Wright.

RWU's lead would not last long as the Colonels took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth. Allie Carver came through with the crucial hit, a two-run homer to left center to make it 3-2 Colonels.Curry added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning, getting an RBI single from Bruno and Amy Nolan scoring on a two-out error at third.

Taylor Ahearn allowed two runs in seven innings and struck out six in the win. Flaherty went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs, while Bruno and Carver each went 2-for-4 with a run.Meghan Maliga gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings of work in the loss. Messier finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Alicea was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

In the loss to the Seahawks, the Colonels were no-hit over five innings by Nicole Parry. Jennifer Lundstrom took the loss for Curry, falling to 5-8.
