Softball Posts 2-2 Record After Two Days in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. - On Monday, March 15, the Curry College Softball Team opened its 2010 campaign with a 3-2 loss to Wheaton College. The Lyons improved to 4-1. Junior Amanda Peters suffered the loss for Curry, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.  Senior Kristen Jackman went 2-for-3 with an RBI, junior Samantha Velezis went 2-for-3, as did sophomore Laikyn Nadolny. Sophomore Stacey Norton knocked in the Colonels’ other run.

In Game 2, the Colonels (1-1) pushed across the only run of the game in the top of the third inning, recording a 1-0 win over Worcester State (2-2). Velezis drew a lead-off walk and moved into scoring position on a ground out to the pitcher. With two outs in the inning, Jackman drove in Velezis when she belted a single to left. Curry junior Janelle Mayo allowed just two hits in all seven innings of work. Mayo allowed one walk while she fanned five batters.

On Tuesday, March 16, Curry (1-2) got tripped up by NYU Polytech, 5-1. NYU Poly improved to 4-4. Freshman Amanda Felzmann was 1-for-2 with a walk and the team’s only RBI. Nadolny and Velezis got the other two Colonels’ hits. Peters (0-2) threw a complete game in taking the loss, surrendering four earned runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out six.

In Game 2, the Curry (2-2) bats came alive, as the Colonels posted an 8-0, six-inning win over Hamilton College. Sophomore Jillian Nemcovich tossed a no-hitter in picking up her first win of the season. Hamilton had one batter reach base on a hit by pitch and one on an error. Mayo went 3-for-4, while Peters was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Freshman Mikaela Carney knocked in a pair of runs, as did Jackman and Velezis.
