Men's Tennis Falls Just Short at Salve Regina, 5-4

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University senior Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) won two matches to help clinch a 5-4 victory over visiting Curry College on Thursday in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Playing at third doubles with junior Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.), Awwa gave Salve Regina its first point with an 8-2 victory. Andrew Hegarty (East Islip, N.Y.) and Valvel Temin (Swampscott, Mass.) evened the score with an 8-1 final at second doubles.The Seahawks (3-11, 1-5 CCC) earned a pivotol point with their 9-7 win at first doubles from freshmenDonovan Gangewere (Exton, Pa.) and Jack Lawlor (York, Maine).Awwa and Kevin Brocks (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) won at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, while dropping just a total of eight games combined. The Seahawks' fifth point came in the form of a retiree; Lawlor won the first set at first singles and led 3-0 in the second before his opponent retired at No. 1 singles.Temin and Charlie Paltsios (Westford, Mass.) both won in straight sets for the visitors. Meanwhile, with the match already decided, Nick Poulack (Amherst, N.H.) defeated Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7 in a tiebreak).Salve Regina returns to action on Wednesday at Endicott. Curry (0-10, 0-6 CCC) is in action both Friday and Saturday.
