Men's Tennis Drops CCC Opener to Visiting Wentworth, 8-1

MILTON, Mass.  – The Curry College Men's Tennis team fell to visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both schools. The Leopards improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Colonels slipped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in CCC action.

Junior captain Toma Blatchford (Westmount, Quebec) and junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) went to three sets with Drum coming out on top 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. At #2 singles, Valvel Temin (Swampscott, Mass.) got swept by sophomore Nate Schwartz (Chester Spring, Pa.) 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) bested junior Charlie Paltsios (Westford, Mass.) 6-1 and 6-1 in the third pairing. Sophomore Nick Poulack (Amherst, Mass.) pulled out the lone win for Curry beating senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. Freshman Andrew Hegarty (East Islip, N.Y.) was defeated by sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) in the fifth pairing 7-6 (7-4) and 6-2. Finally at #6, sophomore Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) blanked senior Jonathon Schutzman (Bellmore, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-0.

The Colonels were swept in the doubles, starting with Drum and Tocco winning 8-3 over Blatchford and Temin, and then Schwartz and Thomas outlasting Paltsios and Poulack, 9-8 (10-8). Finally at #3, junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) bested Hegarty and Schutzman, 8-2.

The Leopards will travel to Suffolk University Thursday evening for a non-conference match at 6 p.m. The Colonels return to conference action as they play at Western New England on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
