Lasers Best Men’s Soccer in Newton

NEWTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team got down early and failed to climb out of the hole as they fell to Lasell University by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The loss makes the Colonels' record 2-5-0 on the year. The Lasers get their first win and improve to 1-6-0.

The hosts started the scoring very early in the contest, as Simon Nigro (Simsbury, Conn.) scored his second goal of the year, benefitting from an aggressive assist from Francisco Villacorta (Lima, Peru) in the third minute. Just four minutes later, Villacorta found the net with a goal of his own. Kyle Stewart (Webster, Mass.) earned the helper on the tally as the Lasers took a 2-0 edge. The action subsided after the two early scores, as the teams combined for just five shots over the remainder of the first half.

The Colonels came out looking to come back in the second frame, but Lasell survived a flurry of shots from their guests in the 54th minute. The hosts suffered a different fate 13 minutes later, however, as Seth Blasingim (Draper, Utah) scored his first goal of the year and cut into the Laser lead. Blasingim nearly found the equalizer late in regulation, but left it high and came up empty. Instead, with under two minutes remaining, Villacorta secured the win for Lasell, beating a pair of defenders and scoring his second goal of the evening.

Villacorta topped the stat sheet, as both of his shots in the match found the net. Blasingim led the way for the Colonels in shots (4), shots on goal (3), and goals (1). Curry goalie Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass., 2-5-0) secured one save in the loss, while Laser keeper Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass., 1-6-0) hauled in six in his first win of the year.

Curry gets back on the field on Saturday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m. The Colonels will host Nichols in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match of the year. Lasell also returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to face the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph (Conn.) The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
