NEWTON, Mass.– The Lasell men's soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision to Curry College on Thursday afternoon at Taylor Field. The Colonels pick up their first win of the season at 1-1-1, while the Lasers drop their second straight contest and fall to 0-2 overall.
Curry used three set plays and a breakaway goal to set the tone early, leading the Lasers by a 4-0 score at halftime. The Colonels outscored the home team 2-1 in the second half, while outshooting the Lasers 24-12 overall.
Junior Kenan Omerbasic (Windsor, Conn.) netted Lasell's lone goal, his first of the season in the 59th minute.
Curry junior Christian Mancini (Woodbury, Conn.) opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play, as he buried a free kick just outside the 18-yard-box, far out of sophomore keeper Matteo Cugno's (Medford, Mass.) reach. Jake Szyndler (South Dartmouth, Mass.) and Eric Miller (Hanover, Mass.) gave the Colonels the 3-0 bump, as the duo teamed up for two goals from corner kicks within just six minutes of each other. Diego Vargas (McLean, Va.) and Dave Stapleton (North Easton, Mass.) both registered the assists on the plays. Vargas struck two minutes after Miller's goal, netting his first of the season in breakaway fashion for the 4-0 advantage at halftime.
With 14 minutes expired in the second half, Omerbasic gave the Lasers their first goal on a through ball from Autin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.). The Colonels needed just one minute to retaliate, as Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) converted on a penalty shot. Curry sealed the deal with five minutes left in regulation on a hard struck ball by Kyle Henry (Danville, Calif.), that snipped the hands of sophomore reliever Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.).
Cugno suffered the loss in one half of action, making three saves in the effort, while Burhans stopped four shots in second-half relief. Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) garnered his first win in the cage for Curry with one save in 75 minutes of action. Adam DiBrina came in for 15 minutes of relief, and was not contested during the stretch.
The Lasers continue a five-game home stand on Saturday, September 9 when they host the College of Staten Island at 2:45 p.m. Curry returns to action on Sunday for a home game versus Johnson State at noon. (Game Recap Courtesy of Lasell Sports Information)
