Men's Soccer Battles Conference Foe Wentworth to a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match-up Saturday afternoon. With the draw, the Colonels record goes to 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. With the draw, the Leopards go to to 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.

Wentworth was on the attack for most of the first half, outshooting the Colonels 11-3. With a minute and a half to go in the half, Curry took a 1-0 lead. Junior Roy Butlin (Milton, Mass.) fired a driving cross into the 18-yard box, finding the head of Freshman Brandon Rinaldi (Bethlehem, Conn.) who found the top corner. Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the Leopards in shots with three.

The second half was contested similarly to the first, as both teams battled for possession in the middle of the field. In the 67th minute, Wentworth's Martins brought the ball down the sideline and crossed it into the middle, finding the head of Junior Stephen Frazier (Bedford, Mass.) who powered in past Senior goalkeeper Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.). The teams would trade goal scoring opportunities for the rest of the half, with both sides coming up empty. The score stayed at 1-1 going into overtime.

In both halves of overtime, Wentworth stayed on the attack, gaining multiple scoring opportunities, but Johnson stayed solid between the pipes and kept the Colonels in the game. The Colonels would have the last opportunity in overtime, receiving a corner kick with just 15 seconds left on the clock, but nothing materialized from it and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Johnson faced 11 shots on net, stopping 10. Sophomore Matthew Sererak (Winthrop, Maine) faced three shots on net, making two saves. With the tie, Johnson goes to 1-2-1 on the season. Sererak's record also goes to 1-2-1 on the season.

The Leopards will return to action tomorrow afternoon when the travel to Providence, R.I. to take on the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM

The Colonels return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 13 when the welcome visiting Rams of Framingham State in non-conference action. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
