Men's Lacrosse Upset By Sixth Seed Roger Williams in CCC Quarterfinals

MILTON, Mass. – The number three seeded Curry College men's lacrosse team was upset by the number six seed Roger Williams University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field by a 12-10 final.

The win improves the Hawks to 9-7 while the Colonels close the season with a 10-6 record with a 5-3 mark in league play.

Curry opened the contest on a 4-0 run, thanks to goals from Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.), Ryan Ofgant (Natick, Mass.), Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.), an a man-up tally from Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) off an assist from Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.). Roger Williams got on the board at the 2:29 mark of the first quarter on a marker from Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) with the assist going to Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.). They registered the final goal of the quarter as Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) with seven seconds left off a helper from Gabe Reale (Fairfield, Conn.).

The Hawks continued the scoring in the second, grabbing two goals to Curry's none. Marzec recorded both goals with assists going to Grier on one and Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) on the other to knot the game at four heading into the halftime intermission.

Roger Williams put up the first three goals coming out of the break, two from Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) and the other from MacIntyre to push the lead to 7-4 with 9:48 left in the frame. The squads traded markers over the final nine minutes. Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) connected with Newell as he found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity. Bova scored 1:45 later while DeLeary pulled the Colonels to within two on a goal off a helper from Jake Stebbins as Roger Williams led 8-6 after three.

The Hawks began the final quarter on a 3-0 run with two goals going to Marzec and the third to Mullane. Curry answered back with a three-goal spurt on goals from MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.), Serra, and Newell to tighten the contest with 5:43 remaining in regulation.

The teams traded markers over the final five minutes as the contest ended in a 12-10 final.

Marzec led Roger Williams with six points on five goals and one assist. Grier put up five points on two goals plus three helpers. Bova, Mullane, and MacIntyre was the final Hawks with multiple points on the game.

Newell paced the Colonels with five points on a hat trick and two assists. DeLeary registered two goals while Stebbins and Serra put up multiple points on the afternoon.

Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) was credited with the win in the cage, converting 19 saves against 29 shots. Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) was given the loss, making 15 saves while facing 27 shots.

The loss ends the season for the Colonels. Roger Williams advances to the CCC Semifinals and will travel to second-seed Endicott on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
