Men's Lacrosse Downs Maine Maritime, 17-6

CASTINE, Maine – Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) scored three goals and dished out an assist in Maine Maritime Academy's 17-6 loss to Curry College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Colonels took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter, and added a man-up goal at 12:15 to take a 5-0 lead. Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) put the Mariners on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:58, and Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) found Grant-Roy once again at 9:32 for a man-up goal to cut the deficit to just three goals.

Curry added two more goals to close out the half, taking a 7-2 lead into the intermission.

Samuelson scored his first goal of the game at 12:04 in the third quarter, and added another at 8:48, but Curry scored six times in the third to take a 13-4 lead.

Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) added his third goal of the season with 8:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Samuelson secured the hat trick with a man-up goal at 3:17 on a pass from Brendan Broderick (Messenda, N.Y.). The Colonels added four more goals in the fourth to claim the 17-6 victory.

Samuelson ended the afternoon with three goals, two ground balls and an assist, Grant-Roy tallied five ground balls, two goals, two caused turnovers and an assist and Martel grabbed a goal and dished out an assist, while causing one turnover and scooping up a ground ball. Ryan McLellan (Sidney, Maine) two turnovers, and scooped up a ground ball, while Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) stopped 12 shots in net, and scooped up a team-high six ground balls.

Matt Serra led Curry with four goals and an assist, while teammates Mj Urbano, Ed Johnson, Brandon Flaim and Tom Cashin added a pair of goals each. Chris Bronander led all players with four caused turnovers, while Steven Grogan scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, going 13-of-19 from the faceoff. Shane O'Brien earned the win in net for the Colonels, stopping eight shots.

The Mariners fall to 0-4 on the season, while Curry improves to 5-0. Maine Maritime will return to action next Friday, March 25 when they host Norwich University before opening up North Atlantic Conference play against Green Mountain College on Saturday, March 26.
