Men's Lacrosse Edges Visiting Salve Regina, 12-10

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated Salve Regina University 12-10 , in men's Lacrosse action on Tuesday, April 17 in Milton, Mass.  With the win the Colonels improve to 7-6 overall, while the Seahawks fall to 1-5 overall.

Salve was first to get on the board scoring at the 14:19 minute mark by sophomore Curtis McKeon (West Haven, Conn.). The Colonel’s were able to score their first goal at the 9:31 on a goal by senior Russell Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) off an assist by freshman Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.). Lanham scored next for the Colonel’s, scoring just one minute later. Sophomore Connor Arnold (Clifton Park, N.Y.) brought Curry to a 3-1 lead at the 7:41 minute mark off an assist by Robert Nash (Wellesley, Mass.). The Seahawks Beau Bennardo (Rumson, N.J.) contributed to the scoring for Salve, ending the first quarter with the Colonels holding a 3-2 advantage after one period.

Curry starting the second frame with senior Sean Gallagher (Topsfield, Mass.) scoring at the 11:19 mark. Lanham was credited with the assist.  The Seahawks followed up just 1:19 when junior Francis McNulty (Durham, Conn.) netted one off an assist by James Dillon (Jupiter, Fla.), cutting Curry's lead to 4-3. Salve went on to tally two more to take over the lead. Freshman Steve Russell (Bayport, N.Y.) scored off an assist from freshman Zach Alexander (Falmouth, Maine) to tie the game and freshman Bryan Walsh (North Andover, Mass.) earned the go ahead from Bennardo. The Colonel’s answered back when Lanham scored off a pass from Gallagher.  Just 51 seconds later however Alexander netted his first on the night unassisted.  Curry was able to tie the game at 6-6 before the half ended with 29 seconds to play.  Lanham scored his fourth when freshman John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) sent him a pass from behind the net. 

Shots after the first two periods were 26-16 in Curry’s favor; Salve held the advantage in groundballs with 20 while the Colonel’s scooped up15.  The Seahawks also won 11 of 14 face-offs.

The third period saw just four goals scored with each team having two.  Salve got tallies from Alexander and Walsh, both unassisted scores.  Curry got two, both from junior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.).  Lanham and junior Andrew Navoni (Natick, Mass.) each had an assist.  The teams were tied at 8-8 heading into the final frame.

Natale gave the Colonels back the lead just 51 seconds into the fourth but the Seahawks answered back quickly to once again tie the game.  Salve's junior Taylor Braun (Commack, N.Y.) netted his only goal of the game, beating a Curry defender for an unassisted score.  The Colonels scored back-to-back goals to take a two goal lead that the Seahawks couldn't recover from.  Castellano chipped in a goal and assisted on another Natale point.  Salve got one more at the 5:11 mark when McKeon saw an open McNulty alone infront of the net but it was Arnold who had the insurance goal with just over two minutes to play.  Lanham assisted on Arnold's goal for his third on the night.

Lanham led the Colonels in scoring on seven points with four goals and three assists.  The Seahawks were led by Alexander who had three points on two goals and an assist.

Curry outshot Salve 51-33 in the game.  The Seahawks won 15 of 25 face-offs and had 38 groundballs while the Colonels had 31.

Curry’s senior goaltender Michael Hibbard (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 15 saves for the win. Salve’s freshman goalkeeper, Jackson Petri (Wenham, Mass.) made 22 saves in the loss.

Curry will travel to CCC opponent Wentworth on April 19 for a 7:00 p.m. game time. Salve hosts the University of New England on April 21 for a 2:30 p.m. start.
