MILTON, Mass. – Trailing 2-0 after two periods, the Babson College men's ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals in the final period to defeat Curry College by a 4-2 final in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at Max Ulin Rink. The win pushes the Beavers to 11-3-1 overall while the Colonels slip to 6-5-2.
Curry got the first goal of the contest 10:59 into the opening period as freshman Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) capitalized on a power play opportunity to give the Colonels the 1-0 advantage. Junior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) and sophomore Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) were awarded the assists on the marker.
The Colonels doubled the lead in the second period thanks to a goal from Vizzo just 54 seconds into the frame. The tally was the only marker of the frame as Curry carried a 2-0 advantage into the final period. Junior goalie Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) preserved the clean sheet after two, turning away 10 shots by the Beavers.
Babson came out strong in the third period, tallying four goals on just 10 shots. Freshman Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) ended the shutout with a goal 2:06 into the final stanza. The helpers on the goal went to freshman Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) and sophomore Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.). The Beavers then knotted the game almost three minutes later on a marker from senior Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.). The assists on the goal were awarded to sophomore Brendan Casey (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.). Babson then broke the tie exactly seven minutes later on a tally by freshman Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.). The visitors then added an insurance marker with 3:34 remaining in regulation, thanks to a goal from sophomore Patrick Flynn (Framingham, Mass.). The Colonels were unable to answer back as the game ended in a 4-2 final.
Curry held a slim edge in shots for the contest, 25-24. The Colonels made the most of its lone power play opportunity, going 1-for-1 while Babson ended the night 0-for-1.
Senior goalie Bryan Botcher (Mequon, Wis.) made 23 saves in the victory for the Beavers. Ketola stopped 20 shots in defeat for Curry.
Curry continues its busy home stretch with a contest on Tuesday, January 8, welcoming in Plymouth State for a 6:50 puck drop. Babson continues a season-long streak of seven consecutive games on the road on Friday, January 11 at the University of Southern Maine at 7:00 p.m.
