Hockey Edges Visiting Western New England, 2-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's hockey team defeated Western New England, 2-1, in ECAC Northeast action on Saturday evening at the Max Ulin Rink in Milton, Mass. With the win, the Colonels improve to 9-11-2 overall and 5-7-2 in conference play.  The loss drops the Golden Bears to 2-16-2 on the season and 1-10-1 in the conference.

The teams battled each other through 40 minutes of scoreless play.  Curry held the advantage in shots at 40-31.  Solid play by both netminders held the game at 0-0 heading into the final stanza.  Junior goaltender Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario) stopped all 31 shots he faced for the Colonels.  The Golden Bears freshman goaltender Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.) saved all 40 shots he saw.

Curry was first to get on the board in the third period at the 7:48 minute mark.  Sophomore Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) fired one past the glove of Gollmer to take the 1-0 lead.  Freshmen Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Zachary White (Milford, Conn.) were credited with the assists.  Junior Mike Apreda (Newmarket, Ontario) netted the eventual game-winning goal at 14:30.  WNE's freshman Connor Eckenrod (Ebensburg, Pa.) was called for a two-minute slash at 12:31.  With just one second remaining in the power-play, Apreda tallied the team's second of the night off an assist by freshman Mack Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba).  The Golden Bears cut the lead down to one with five minutes remaining to play on their own power-play score.  After senior Brian White (Santa Ana, Calif.) was in the box for a two-minute slash penalty, WNE took advantage of the man-up advantage.  At 15:13, just 13 seconds into the PP, freshman David Kleyman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took a slap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Sinclair.  Kleyman earned help from senior Chris Lembo (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Bryan Hurley (Baldwin, N.Y.).  The Golden Bears kept the pressure on looking for the tying score but the Colonels held them off for the 2-1 victory.

Curry went 1-3 on power plays while WNE was 1-4. The Colonels outshot the Golden Bears 50-40.
