MILTON, Mass.  – The Curry College hockey team went 0-2 on the weekend at the Martha's Vineyard Classic in Oak Bluffs, Mass. 

On Friday night, the Colonels fell to the #6 nationally-ranked Hobart College, 4-2.   The loss dropped the Colonels to 5-8-2 overall while the Statesmen improved to 11-2-2 overall.

Hobart was first to get on the board 8:05 into the game, when Senior Sean Rudy capitalized on a power- play opportunity. Junior Carl Belizario and freshman Trevor Poirier were credited with the assists. A little over a minute later, the Statesmen took a 2-0 lead after senior Ben Gamache took a slap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Curry's junior netminder Brett Sinclair (St. Catherine's, Ontario).  Gamache was assisted by Belizario and freshman Tanner Shaw.

Hobart's Rudy tallied his second just 48 seconds into the second period, giving Hobart a 3-0 advantage. The Colonels cut the lead down to two after junior Shane Tracy one-timed the puck past the glove of the Statesmen goaltender Sophomore Frank Oplinger.  Sinclair and junior Joe Scarfo earned the assists.

Hobart answered back 6:19 into the final period off a shorthanded goal by sophomore Tyler Wolf. Curry's junior Tyler Vankleef chipped in for his own shorthanded goal at 13:53 for the final score of the game.  Junior Ellery O'Hara and sophomore Adam Valadao earned the assists.

Sinclair made 26 saves for the Colonels.  Oplinger finished with 21 saves in goal for the Statesmen.

On Saturday, in the final game of the Martha's Vineyard Tournament, the Colonels fell to Elmira College, 4-1.  Curry falls to 5-9-2 on the season while the Soaring Eagles improved to 7-2-1.

Elmira was first to get on the board first at 7:15 into the opening stanza. After both teams failed to capitalize on power-play opportunities, the Soaring Eagles took the 1-0 advantage during even play.  Elmira's sophomore Tyler Theodoulou netted an unassisted score after one-timing the puck past Curry's freshman netminder Spencer Cookson.  The Colonels struggled to get one past the Soaring Eagles goaltender junior Sal Magliocco as he turned away all the shots he faced.

The second period saw the two squads called for a combined 38 penalty minutes on 11 penalties called.  Only one goal was scored off a man-up situation which came from Elmira.  At 10:53 senior Brian Depp took a slap shot that soared over the shoulder of Cookson for the eventual game-winning tally.  Depp was assisted by senior Michael Collins and freshman Blake O'Neill.  With just 20 seconds left on the clock, O'Neill helped senior Carter Shinkaruk score his first on the night to give the Soaring Eagles a 3-0 cushion heading into the final period. 

The final stanza was evenly played as each team netted a goal.  It wasn't until the 15:55 mark that one was scored.  Elmira's Collins gave his team a commanding 4-0 lead after he was set up by junior Alexander Taulien and freshman Jonathan Grassie.  Curry answered with 2:50 left in regulation, but that effort proved to be not enough as the Soaring Eagles marched away with a 4-1 victory.  Freshman Zachary White tallied the goal for the Colonels off an assist by classmate Hector Majul. 

Cookson made an impressive career-high 47 saves for the Colonels.  Magliocco finished with 28 stops in goal for the Soaring Eagles.

Curry is next in action when they travel to Endicott College in an ECAC Northeast match-up on January 21 at 7:00 p.m.
