Roger Williams Tops Men's Basketball

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team suffered a 75-59 loss to visiting Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at the Katz Gymnasium.

The Hawks (11-7 overall, 3-6 CCC) swept the season series as junior Drew Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) led the way. Hart scored 29 points on 13-for-19 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds while pitching in three assists, two steals, and a block. Harris finished in double digits with 27 points to go along with three boards as Roger Williams shot 48 percent as a team.

The Colonels (5-13 overall, 1-8 CCC) received a big contribution from senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.). He netted 25 points on 11-for-19 shooting while also registering six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Classmate Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 11 points, one rebound, two assists, and three steals.

The teams played a relatively close first 10 minutes. After a Thorpe-Johnson jumper to make the score 15-14 in favor of the Hawks, Roger Williams scored seven straight to push the lead to eight. The lead would hit double digits on two separate occasions in the next couple minutes, reaching 13 (31-18) on a triple by Harris with 6:45 to go. Curry had a run of its own, rattling off a 7-0 spurt to cut the margin to six following an old-fashioned three-point play from Thorpe Johnson. The Hawks had an answer, outscoring the Colonels 10-2 in the remainder of the stanza to grab a 41-27 advantage at the break.

Curry chipped away at the deficit in the second half, trimming the lead to 10 points on two different occasions, getting to within eight at one point. Sophomore Orlando Ashford (Stamford, Conn.) knocked down a three-ball with 12:48 left in the frame and then the Colonels came back from 17 points down to pull with eight on a 12-2 spurt to make the score 65-57 with 3:34 remaining on a layup by freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.)

Roger Williams closed the contest on a 10-2 run to capture the contest by the 16-point margin, 75-59.

Curry hits the road for two straight conference games, beginning on Tuesday, January 28 at Gordon College for a 7:30 p.m. start. Roger Williams will next host Western New England University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
