Free Throws Ice Men's Basketball's Season-Opening Win at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – The Curry College men's basketball team picked up a 76-72 victory over Rivier University on Friday night in the season opener for both squads at the Muldoon Gymnasium.

Senior guard Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) played every minute of the contest and lifted the Colonels to victory with team-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Classmate Kieran Carroll (Greenwich, Conn.) also turned in an impressive performance with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) rounded out the Colonels in double figures as he finished with 16 points to match Carroll.

Curry led by as many as six points in the opening half, but the Raiders pulled back even at 36-36 at the intermission.

With plenty of time left in the game, Curry hung around and pushed the lead to five following a lay-up from Thorpe-Johnson with 8:16 remaining in regulation. Rivier was able to sneak back into a tie with 2:19 left.

The Colonels then closed out the final stretch on a 7-3 run. After senior Issaiah Chappell (Sunapee, N.H.) knocked down a three with just under 1:20 remaining to cut the Colonels' advantage to one, 73-72, Curry then iced the game at the charity stripe, thanks to one from Stewart and the other two from Thorpe-Johnson. Rivier had a few more chances in the final moments, but was unable to find the equalizer.

Chappell poured in a game-high 38 points on efficient 15-for-24 shooting, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Curry (1-0 overall) returns to the hardwood tomorrow, November 9 against Lesley University at 8:00 p.m. The game will be played at Medford High School. Rivier (0-1 overall) will host the Lynx for its next game on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
