Curry, which improved to 7-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (and 10-4 overall), out-rebounded the Golden Bears 49-39 and shot 47 percent from the field compared to Western New England’s 31 percent clip. The Golden Bears have now lost three-consecutive conference games, and their record now stands at 4-10 overall (3-5 CCC).
The two teams appeared to be evenly matched in the first 10 minutes of the game, with Curry holding a slight 17-16 advantage midway through the half. The Colonels slowly began to pull away toward the end of the first, largely due to the play of center Ted Amendola (12 points, 11 rebounds) and guard Lambros Papalambros (10 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds). The Golden Bears, after keeping up with Curry in the early stages of the game, trailed by 15 points (43-28) at the half.
Western New England came out for the second half ready to play, and immediately began cutting into the Curry advantage. The Golden Bears were able to get the deficit down to a manageable nine, but could get no closer due to poor shooting. After making 40 percent of their shots in the first half, Western New England shot 25% in the second half, which allowed Curry to re-build its lead.
The Golden Bears were led by center Dennis Rinaldi, who had six points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and forward Zack Askew, who finished with six points and eight boards. Curry’s Sedale Jones, a senior guard, led a balanced Colonels offense that featured five double-digit scorers. Jones had a game-best 15 points.
Western New England will try to get back on the winning track this Saturday when it pays a visit to the University of New England. The Nor’easters are currently in the CCC cellar, sporting a 1-5 record (2-11 overall). Curry will look to keep its conference record unblemished when it hosts Eastern Nazarene on Thursday night.
