Football Introduces Captains For 2019 Season

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team has selected three student-athletes to serve as team captains for the 2019 season.

Senior defensive lineman Hunter Atwood (Reading, Mass.), senior defensive back Ted Flaherty (Hanover, Mass.), and senior wide receiver Nick Villanueva (Hanson, Mass.) have been selected to lead the 2019 Colonels.

Atwood, a three-year letterman, has appeared in 29 career games. In 2018, he recorded a career-high 57 tackles and a career-best five quarterback sacks. With those numbers, Atwood was an All-CCC Football First Team Defensive selection. He finished the season ranked tied for third in the conference in sacks.

Flaherty is also a three-year letter winner and has played in 28 career games. In 2018, he registered 17 tackles and recovered one fumble. Additionally, Flaherty broke up one pass. Over the last three years, he has tallied 31 tackles, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two pass break-ups.

Villanueva, who led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, will serve as the final captain of the 2019 squad. He will look to continue playing at the level he did in 2018. Appearing in all ten games last year, he led the team with 655 receiving yards and six touchdowns. That ranked him third in the conference in receiving yards per game (65.5) and tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns with six. In his time in purple and white, Villanueva has played in 26 games and has 97 receptions for 1,404 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also has been a two-time All-Conference selection.

The Colonels will open up their season at home against Stevenson University on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m.
